Chapter Fourteen

Donovan looked up, stopping in his tracks as he saw both of us watching him. “What’s wrong? You two look like you’re about to give me bad news.”

“You look like you need a night off and some good sleep,” Ellery countered. “Oh, and we might have bad news.”

He groaned, slumping onto the couch. She wasn’t wrong, his shirt was crumpled, and I was pretty sure he wore two different colors of socks.

“Can I hear the news after the night off and sleep?”

“You absolutely can,” I sat beside him, patting his knee. “It won’t change the fact that Ben Tackett’s name is all over the case of the disappearance of Tracy Boyle, but you can have whatever you need.”

“I need a career change.”

Ellery snorted, then covered her mouth. “I think it’s too late for that.”

He sat up, pointing a finger her way. “I am not that much older than the two of you.”

“I am not taking over,” Nora mumbled, taking a seat. She looked as tired as Donovan did. I bet she never expected this level of drama when moving from Louisville to Bell Hollow.

I held up my hands, not willing to jump into the middle. “I’m Switzerland. That being said, the two of you can lay on the couch for a power nap if you need to. We’ll be here to update you when you wake up.”

Donovan shook his head. “Nope. No resting. What do we need to know.”

“To be fair, we can’t say for certain that Ben is involved, but he was definitely the guy that Jenny saw the night she was supposed to see Tracy. And Dorothy Boyle thinks he knows what happened to her daughter.”

“Wait. Dorothy Boyle was your side trip?” He was much more alert than he had been before. “Tell me more.”

“Yes! I love it when you two follow a lead,” Nora said.

Donovan gave her a look, which made the three of us laugh.

“What? They’re intelligent women with no rules. We need them,” she replied.

“We need them to be careful,” he said

I waited for them to focus on me again, knowing Ellery and I might be in for a lecture later. Or at least me. To be fair, he had to know we were up to something. We’d dropped enough hints. Once they both looked at me, I continued.

“Initially, she wanted nothing to do with us. I felt for her. She still had a backpack of Tracy’s sitting on a chair. It probably hasn’t moved since Tracy, or she, put it there,” I replied. “She made an excuse about a meeting and essentially kicked us out. Then, she showed up here. You just missed her.”

“She kicked you out of her house but showed up here?”

“Apparently, she wanted to make sure we weren’t with the mayor,” Ellery said. “She called Jenny to check us out.”

“Wow. And she thinks that Ben knows what happened to Tracy. Is it simply because he was with her that night? I agreed that he should have been investigated, but it’s not a smoking gun.
